Thoth Princes, Cherubim and The Bible
The Thoth Princes have a unique relationship with the Cherubim of the bible by virtue of their position on the middle pillar in the sixth sephiroth of the Tree of Life. In this article we will discuss this often missed aspect of the Princes of the Thoth Tarot. My new YouTube channel is : Thoth Tarot Videos. The Court Card videos are yet to be remade.
Their direct relationship with Kether (Spirit) can be seen on the Tree of Life diagram below:
(ii) Thoth Princes A Summary of Meanings
Prince of Wands = Gets things done, very creative and has a lust for life.
Prince of Cups = the most complex of the Princes. Has immense insight into life but can be cruel, secretive and self centred.
Prince of Swords = hightly developed intellect which is often abstract. May lack direction, emotional warmth and empathy.
Prince of Disks = concerned with practical matters, health and the material side of life.
(iii) Thoth Princes Cherubim and The Bible
What are Cherubim traditionally ?
Cherubim/cherubs are angelic beings involved in the worship and praise of God. The cherubim are first mentioned in the Bible:
Genesis 3:24, After He drove the man out, He placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
Interpretation : eastern side = right side = our spiritual side (Garden of Eden in East, Fish caught on right side)
Cherubim = our higher self, which is why the Princes are wearing the cherubim on the heads as helmets (see daigrams below), as the head is where the highest chakra is located.
flaming sword = truth- sword cuts through things, Jesus says he comes not to make peace by with a sword.
guard the way of the tree of life = our higher self directing us upwards spiritually
Matthew 10 : 34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Luke 12 : 51 Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division:
The Tree of life is the main glyph of Qabalah and the Princes are illustrated in the image below:
(a) Prince of Wands and the Cherubim
(b) Prince of Cups and the Cherubim
(c) Prince of Swords and the Cherubim
(d) Prince of Disks and the Cherubim
(iv) Thoth Princes Conclusion
After studying the Thoth Princes we can see that they are rather active characters and balance the strife of the fives in their suit with the harmony and balance of the respective six of the minor arcana.
The most focussed are the Prince of Wands and Prince of Disks, with the Prince of Cups being the most complex as a result of his association with Scorpio. The Prince of Swords is the one who lacks direction the most and this is represented by the lack of focus in the image.
All of the Princes are associated with Kether as a result of their location on the middle pillar of the tree of life. They are linked to the Cherubim as seen symbolically above as this bestows on them the potential to open up a spiritual aspect (even the Prince of Disks)in their life and subsequently this may be reflected in a reading.
