(i) Four of Disks YouTube Video
My new YouTube channel is : Thoth Tarot Videos. The minor arcana videos are yet to be remade.
(ii) Thoth Four of Disks
The Four of Disks depicts a castle with 4 towers on a hillside surrounded by a blue moat with a yellow wave pattern. The 4 towers hold one of the alchemical elements. The gates are at the 4 points of the compass with the main gate being at the southern entrance.
Power definition: the ability to empower oneself and others

(iv) Four of Disks & The Tree of Life
Binah in Assiah & is associated with Chesed.
Chesed = associated with law, order, stability and is the first manifestation from the spiritual triad of the first 3 sephira.
(v) Shemhamphorasch Angels of the Four of Disks
(i) Chevakiah: Inheritance of possessions. Loves order and peace. Loyalty rewarded. When negative, egotism, holding on to the past.
(ii) Menadel: Help finding work. Provides resources to live a balanced life. When negative, person too preoccupied with matter.
(vi) Astrology of the Four of Disks
1. Decan: 3rd decan of Capricorn 20 – 30 degrees
2. Sun in Capricorn
Capricorn is a feet-on-the-ground, eye-on-the-prize sign. Those with Sun in Capricorn have a realistic, grounded approach to life that can be seen no matter how dreamy the rest of the birth chart suggests. These people know how to do things, and to get things done.
The Sun energises Capricorn earth & material benefits/authority are the result. The sun in astrology is the symbol of your dynamism or power and Capricorn is the applying our power out into the world in a useful and practical way.
However in the story of Midas everything he touched turned to gold, even his loved ones so there is also a warning of the limitations of this card that material gain and authority are not all there is to a fulfilling lifestyle.
(vii) Symbology of the Four of Disks
Fortress = A strong sense of power of keeping things out and within.The castle in the centre of the card represents ourselves and material possessions.
Drawbridge = shows we have control about what we let into our live and what we give
4 towers = represent the 4 disks of the card, each one containing one of the elements
6 crenulations = 6 is the number of the sun
Southern gate = main gate into Malkuth where most of the power of this card is directed. It is reinforced by the glyph of Capricorn on the path thus demonstrating that this card refers to the way we empower ourselves practically in the world.
Northern path = inscribed with the sun is inaccessible from the fortress.
Elements = all separate and stable. 4 is a stable number.. The elements being contained within a closed structure means nothing lost, security and strength in all aspects of our being. There is a solidity about us, the castle being very solid but not superfluous (not being necessary). All the elements come together to form the material world.
air = intellectual power
water = emotional fluidity
fire = spiritual energy
earth = physical health and well-being
Spirit is missing and there is a sense that this is a very material card.
Moat = our boundaries and knowing where they are and a restraining factor.
(viii) Quotes from the Book of Thoth
- The disks themselves are square, revolution is the opposite to the card which is about knowing boundaries.
(ix) Divinatory Meanings of the Four of Disks
A need to set your limits and boundaries and to become more established in your character and integrity. Life is orderly and secure but it may be barren and discontented. The orange background hints at this. Orange being the colour of the sun but our life may become a desert if we are too constrained and emotionally not fulfilled or spirit is missing from our lives (symbol is missing as stated above).
The castle can be our sanctuary where we find our inner voice or it can be materialistic and something to show off to others.
Very often when this appears in a reading we are looking at a situation where we need to make practical decisions and also we are needing to be true to ourselves. It is showing the need for material stability even though as people we are not naturally given to stagnation.
We may also be tested not to give our personal power away We need discriminate where and to whom to say no. Sometimes we need to draw up the bridge and stay within our inner sanctuary so we not give too much of ourselves away.
Upright
- Financial and material security is important to you and you have solid foundations in place.
- Assets due to sound judgement/wise investment
- Willing to work for what you want. Confidence in applying yourself in the world.
- A dependable person who acts with integrity.
- 5. Fulfillment of our personal goals and dreams.
Reversed
- Not sharing enough of what you have.
- Becoming too materialistic and using material success as an end in itself.
- Greed
- Financial insecurities about the future.
- Sticking to the letter of the law without empathy. Cold and un empathic.
- Need to be more generous.
Biddy Tarot sums up the negative aspect of the card:
“This attitude is an expression of extreme attachment to the material ‘things’ of the world and is unhealthy in the long-term. Sadly, possessions have become your life and you now assess your self-worth based on how expensive your car is, how many bedrooms and flat-screen TVs your house has, etc. What this also means is that you must continually work hard to generate an income to sustain this standard of living and to sustain your ongoing obsession with material possession.”
