(ii) Thoth Five of Cups

In the Five of Cups, the cups are arranged in the shape of an inverted pentagram & the 2 lotuses in the centre top of the card are withering.

(iv) The Five of Cups & the Tree of Life

five of cups

Geburah in Briah The FIRE of Geburah has overpowered the watery elements of this card and so we get a very arid environment. It also overpowers any good relationship between Mars and Scorpio.

(v) Shemhamphorasch Angels of Five of Cups

Leuviah: Memory of past lives, useless memories. Past atrocities. Sadness from loss, induced bitterness.

Pahaliah: Subjects concerning knowledge of good and evil. Kundalini Awakening. When negative, relentless struggle, atheism. Difficult karma.

(vi) Astrology of the Five of Cups

 1. Decan : 1st decan (0 – 10°) of Scorpio ruled by Mars.

2. Mars in Scorpio

We would expect a positive aspect to this card as Mars rules Scorpio but there are factors which prevent this:

 It takes place in the fifth Sephiroth, Geburah which is all about destruction. This also adds extra fire as Geburah is ruled by Mars so we have an imbalance of energy as all this fire evaporates the water ! Emotions cannot flow, there has been too much intensity. Perhaps our disappointment is a result of too much fire in us resulting in;

unrealistic expectations, being too intense (fire in Scorpio), going to far too fast. Due to this imbalance  our anticipated outcome has not happened.

(vii) Symbology of the Five of Cups

Empty Blue Cups = water has evaporated, we have not got a return on the investment we have made.

Inverted Pentagram = spirit weighed down by the matter (the world) = things in our worldly emotional life are overwhelming us at the present moment.

Dry Lotuses/Arid Background = we feel emotionally empty, nothing is growing within us and we feel stuck , unable to express ourselves and what we feel.

(viii) Geomancy & the Five of Cups

Associated with the Geomantic figure RUBENS which is not a great omen:

five of cups

Rubens, meaning “red”, has an obscure shape. It suggests an inverted cup or goblet, but the connection of this with “red” is unclear. Possibly suggesting a vessel closed at the bottom, cut off from the light of heaven, its opening pointing downwards to hell.

(ix) Quotes from the Book of Thoth

” Yet the powerful male influences do not show actual decay, only the beginning of destruction, hence the anticipated pleasure is frustrated.” (p.198)

“The lotuses have their petals torn by fiery winds.” (p.198)

(x) Divinatory Meanings of the Five of Cups

Upright

thoth tarot 5 of cups

The Five of Cups represents a lack of fulfilment or non-attainment of expected results. You are feeling disappointed that a situation has not turned out as you had liked, and instead of moving on to new & better experiences, you are wallowing in self-pity and regret about your expectations that have been let down.

You are quickly becoming disillusioned with your  life ahead and your future.

If you are feeling disappointed by another person’s actions, and then find it within your heart to forgive that person, letting go from the disappointment. You may also need to re-assess your expectations that have led you to this disappointment. Were you expecting too much from someone?

One thing that is always worth bearing in mind with a card like this is that the feelings which arise when it occurs often scare us into failing to take another risk or making effort in the future, hiding away where we can’t be disappointed again. But then if we give in to those sort of feelings we’re expecting to be disappointed again.

Reversed

five of cups

All of the above, but a more long-term occurrence, with the intensity of Mars and Scorpio playing their part in deep-rooted feelings of unfulfilled expectations and lifestyle

When I think of “red” while looking at the reubens figure it conjurs the thought of the monthly menstrual cycle. The shape of the glyph reflects ovaries and an open womb enptying its contents. The egg was not fertalize, the potential of creation went unfullfilled. Now it painfully purges before trying again.

in comparison I suggest the Little mermaid as a tale of unrequited love Mars in scorpio, Burning herself in her efforts to attract love. Only at the end after the pain does she eventually transcend
    Mars in Scorpio.

It’s Rubeus, not Rubens (who was a painter) or Reubens or whatever. Rubeus is simply Latin for Red. Please correct, here as we as in the 7 of Disks.
